Hungry Bear
03:27
|
|||
I ain't no sinner, still I ain't no saint
I'm a hungry bear, but my baby ain't
She's a tiger, she got yellow hair
And she roars like thunder when she sees her hungry bear
And I'm a hungry bear
I don't know, but I been told
The streets of heaven are paved with gold
I don't buy it, though I really don't care
Cause streets of gold don't feed a hungry bear
And I'm a hungry bear
The man on the TV set
Says the fires of hell will get me yet
When I face that devil, I'll stand and stare
Cause the fires of hell don't scare a hungry bear
And I'm a hungry bear
The preacher says I shouldn't kiss my honey
Says God wants me to send him all my money
He says God lives, but till he tells me where
I'll give my money to my honey
Cause my honey loves her hungry bear
And I'm her hungry bear
Good God, you can see, my baby's a tiger
When she growls at me, I lay down beside her
There nothing we fear, we don't fight fair
Don't even go near that tiger sleeping
In the shadow of a hungry bear
And I'm a hungry bear
Now if Jesus wants to walk on the waves and
Give flying lessons to the people he saves
It's fine by me, Go fly somewhere
Just don't bother me or no other hungry bear
Oh, I'm a hungry bear
Let the cripples walk, let the blind men see
Just tell them suckers to watch out for me
You can walk by my baby, but you better not stare
Cause you mess with her,
You'll be messing with a hungry bear
And I'm a hungry bear
I move quick, I move hard,
I'm in the shadows you saw
You'll see muscle and fur, tooth and claw
The earth will move, the sky will tear
I crush my foes, I'm breathing down your neck
I'm a home wrecker, and your home I'll wreck
I'm a hungry bear
I'm a hungry bear, I'm just a hungry bear
And my baby is a tiger
And I love to lay beside her Hmmmm . . .
If she was a bicycle I'd ride her
I live in the wild and I wear furry underwear
I'm a hungry bear

The Man with Three Wives
02:52
|
|||
The morning sun was in his eyes
A woman’s scarf made his disguise
He rode, but all he saw was sun
He rode for two days
Then he saw an unmarked grave
He said I wonder who’s the lucky one
Welcome to our town Mister,
Are you looking for someone
Are you riding for pleasure for rest
No, I gambled with a man
Down by the Rio Grande
And now I’m on his trail, I confess
He had two steely knives,
He had two silent wives
And both of them he kept close to him
One was an Indian woman
From the west of Wyome
The other woman was fair of hair and skin
Now he kept both his brides
Always by his side
Though neither of them did he love the best
The fair skinned woman I keep
To remind me of the east
The Indian woman, she guides me through the west
But I had another wife
And I loved her more than life
Her name it was Carmelita De Lune
She was a Spanish girl
But I lost her to the world
She used to sing so soft a Spanish tune
Mi amore sólo para ti
Te lo suplico
No mendje viajar sin tu amor
My love only for you always
I beg of you sir
I pray you never ride without love
Mi amore sólo para ti
I beg of you sir
I pray you never ride without love

You Should Be Loved
02:52
|
|||
So you're saying,
you don't know what to do
This guy you think you love
You think he don't love you
He's got a temper, you say
And he fools around
And out with his friends
He puts you down
Well, you're a pretty girl
And you're really bright
A guy would be lucky
And should treat you right
And if you don't mind
Me saying so
You should be loved
and so I want you to know
I got a buddy in the Bronx
who I just saw
A nice guy, two kids and a dog, and this brother-in-law
Who just got out and he's looking for work
And this guy you think you love
Seems like, such a . . .
Ah, forget about it
You know, something could happen
And you give something else a try
Sometimes you just gotta say good-bye
Now you think about it
And if you want come by
I could get you a discount
'Cause I know the guy
You . . . should be loved in this world
You . . . you're a really nice girl
Hey, let me get you a tissue
Man, you're a sight
You just think about it
Don't have to be tonight
You . . . should be loved in this world
You . . . should be loved in this world

That Train
03:35
|
|||
That train left the station
That train left the station
That train left the station and gone
I got to the platform, a quarter to five
To see the king of rock and roll arrive
But that train left the station and gone
“There's no one here,” the station master said
“No one at all, neither quick nor dead
No, that train, left the station and gone”
“Yeah the king is gone,” the station man said.
“He looked a little tired, but he seemed well-fed,
Put to supper too often without any bed
No place left to lay his weary head”
That train left the station
That train left the station
That train left the station and gone
The whistle sounded long and hard
The man gave her some steam
and she left the yard
Yeah, that train left the station and gone
Yeah, he give her some steam
and he give her some sand
Left Memphis last night for the promised land
Yeah, that train left the station and gone
He said “Thank you very much”
and then he said “So long”
The man behind the curtain said “The King is gone”
He left the building
and though the building still stands
It's an empty shell without the man
That train left the station
That train left the station
That train left the station and gone
He sang “All Shook Up” and “Love Me Tender”
Then said, “It's time - to return to sender”
That train left the station and gone
He could have stayed all night,
he could have sang forever
But he said, “Let's roll, it's now or never”
And that train left the station and gone
The fire box glowed red, burning Number 9 coal
While the king sang soft, “Well, bless my soul”
They went into a tunnel just out a town
Riding rails of steel John Henry laid down
That train left the station
That train left the station
That train left the station and gone

Your Hand in Mine
02:56
|
|||
A man's home's his castle
They can’t take that away
Mine's just a small cottage
By a lake tucked away
There's a light in the window
I see it softly shine
As I walk home
With your hand in mine
A row boat's rocking gently
As the lake laps against
In the night, a loon's laughing
But at her own expense
Yeah, the joke is on her
Because I'm doing fine
As I walk home,
With your hand in mine
This small home’s my castle
And this is my queen
She laughs when I say that
But knows just what I mean
A starry road's winding
Up above the dark trees
Days and nights are getting cool now
As we stroll through the leaves
So long have I loved you
Still, it’s such a short time
To have, to be walking
With your hand in mine

Blind Man
02:06
|
|||
Blind man lying on the side of the road
Blind man lying on the side of the road
He cried “Oh Lord, how could this be?”
The Lord said "Blind man, follow me”
The Lord said "Blind man, follow me”
Deaf man lying on the side of the road
Deaf man lying on the side of the road
He cried “Oh Lord, how could this be?”
The Lord said, “Deaf man, follow me”
The Lord said, “Deaf man, follow me”
Drunk man lying on the side of the road
Drunk man lying on the side of the road
He cried “Oh Lord, how could this be?”
The Lord said “Drunk man, follow me”
The Lord said “Drunk man, follow me”
I was lying on the side of the road
I was lying on the side of the road
I cried “Oh Lord, how could this be?”
The Lord said “I’ll call you, don’t call me”
The Lord said “I’ll call you, don’t call me”

Beer Song
03:53
|
|||
Once in a lifetime, you might fall in love
If love don’t’ work out, give love a shove
And drink some beer
Watch your troubles disappear
Drink your troubles right out of here
Have yourself a beer
Have another beer
Maybe a third and a fourth beer
There’s plenty here
Watch them disappear
Drink your troubles right out of here
If the woman you loved / comes strolling around
Sit tight with your buds / and stand put your ground
Order another round, just to make it clear
What the hell are you’re doing here
Have a bottle a beer
Have another beer
There's no one’s counting and there’s plenty here
Watch ‘em disappear
Drink your troubles right out of here
If one beer don’t do it, two is fine,
Sometimes you’re gonna have to drink ‘em all the time
Just don’t drink no wine or you’ll just start in crying
It’s way too romantic / for what you’re trying
To accomplish here,
just stick to the beer
Watch your troubles just disappear,
Drink your troubles right out of here
When that woman you loved
Brings by another man
Just ask him if he drinks ‘em from a bottle or a can
Then buy him a beer
It’ll be perfectly clear / Why God put us here
The way that he drinks ‘em will give you clue
Is he more like her or a lot like you
Does he pop the tops and glug ‘em down
Does he offer to buy us all another round
He may be the one who stole her from you
Or he might be your buddy in an hour or two
Why not give him a shot
Why not sit down with him and drink a lot
Sometimes a cold beer really hits the spot
When the morning comes
Don’t count the cans
Just put them in a bag for the garbage man
And go out and buy another six pack,
Cause the night just keeps coming back
Why not buy yourself a half a rack

Flowers Are All I Got
03:33
|
|||
I still put bulbs, in the ground, come October every year
Though I don’t care much for flowers, my wife did when she was here
She’d be disappointed come next spring if I ever forgot
No, I don’t care much for flowers, but now they’re all I got
I saw you out there cutting stems, after looking right and left
you made me remember her, with what memory I got left
In the morning mist you looked like her. cutting flowers here and there
It’s okay by me, go on and cut my flowers / I don’t care
Yeah, I still I put bulbs in the ground, come October every year
Still don’t care much for flowers, but my wife did when she was here
And she’d be disappointed come the spring, if I ever forgot
No, never cared for flowers as much as her, but now they’re all I got
You came by early in the morning, a wisp of fog still on the bay
Stood, with my flowers in your hand
and then you turned and walked away
You’re younger than my wife was, not so bent and grey
I won’t miss those flowers but I missed her, when you went away
Her hair was dark like yours when we was young /
the same quiet in her eyes
You know she’d smile sometimes and when she smiled,
it was always took me by surprise
She’d arrange them flowers, the way she liked,
Set up her painting stuff and then
Paint a picture of them flowers
One still hanging in the den
Yeah I still put bulbs in the ground, come October every year
She did that every fall, all the years that we lived here
She’d be disappointed come next spring, if I ever forgot
No, I never cared much for flowers, but now they’re all I got

I love my baby, she don’t love me,
I loved my baby,
Naturally, I loved my baby,
But my baby threw me out
I loved my baby, every day,
I loved my baby, in every way
I loved my baby, but my baby
threw me out
Well since she left, I got no one left
I’m all by myself
I got no one to be kissing on,
because I won’t kiss on anyone else
I loved my baby, every day
I loved my baby, in every way
I loved my baby,
but my baby threw me out
I love my baby, she don’t love me,
I loved my baby
Naturally, I loved my baby
But my baby threw me out
Well, the winds will come and the winds will blow
And the rain will rain down too
But there’ll be a silver lining to these clouds I’m climbing
If to my own self I’ll be true
I loved my baby, every day,
I loved my baby, in every way
I loved my baby, but my baby threw me out

It was a jingle jangle morning
The day that you were born
You come out beating on a big bass drum
Ma was blowing her horn
Bells were ringing
The sisters were singing
All over town
Ma had been hoping for a lively one,
You wouldn’t let her down.
It was a jingle jangle morning
And man, they were treating you right
Better get some rest, we said
You just might be up all night
The cake was cut, drinks were poured
for some reason, one lady took two
She lifted a glass to mama
And then she lifted a glass to you
It was a jingle jangle morning,
And the neighbors all come by
They said they hadn’t come to stay,
They just wanted to say “Hi”
They took off their hats and gave Ma a hand
As she got the table set
There was some stayed thru to the end of the week
And there’s some that ain’t left yet
That jingle jangle evening,
With your chin tipping toward your chest
Your eyes getting heavy someone said, "Say hey
that child just might need some rest"
So, with the music low, they jingle-jangled slow,
talking all through the night
‘bout that jingle jangle morning
When you first saw the light
Bells were ringing
The sisters were singing
Wearing hats and high heeled shoes
On that jingle jangle morning
Your Pop was smiling with all his might
On that jingle jangle morning
When you first saw the light

Mamakoke
03:38
|
|||
Felt like summer, one spring day
We set out along the tracks
Skipping school on a Good Friday
Three whole days before we’re back.
Just north of the shipyards
And the ghostly barges’ glory
To Mamakoke, an island
Steeped in mystery and story
Long ago, the Indians
Would fish there in the fall
Before the white man, stripers ran (striped bass)
Like they heard a clarion call
We were just some kids
From up iin Quaker Hill
Trying to beat the heat
And the tedium of school
Fishing off the railway trestle
Mess a mackerel in a sack
When Tommy’s leg got caught
‘tween the ties of the railroad track
The Montrealer whistling loud
Come roaring up the line
Bearing down upon us, and on that
Pal of yours and mine
We pushed Tommy back, lying ‘tween the rails
and then leapt for our life,
Twenty feet to the water, as the whistle screamed,
and those steel wheels pounded by
We come up treading water
Squinting in the sun
Afraid to see, what we might see
Tommy gone, and what we had done
We all looked up together
Our hearts pounding, ‘bout to cry,
There was Tommy standing, laughing loud
between us and the sky
Like Lazarus, risen from the dead
He spoke, calm and cool, as could be
asked “Why you down there swimming,
When you could be fishing up here with me?
The sun in the sky above him
Put a halo around his head
“Christ Almighty,” he laughed “You idiots,
Did think that I was dead?”
Yeah, it felt like summer, one spring day
We set out along the tracks
Skipping school on a Good Friday
Three whole days 'fore we’re back

Out Without Me
03:55
|
|||
I don’t know where she goes
But she goes without me
When she goes
And she goes without me
every time she goes out
She comes home late if she comes home at all
I can hear her fumbling in the hall
Smelling of cigarettes and alcohol
and of a good time had by all but me
Cause she goes without me
And she don’t tell me where she goes without me
Don’t see sometimes why she comes back at all
If she don’t like me, I wish she’d say
And leave me here and just go away
And maybe I would be okay this time
A man left alone, sometimes gets angry
But when she comes home
It just reminds me
how much I want her
when she comes back to me
If I had a small gun
maybe I could pop her
As she comes in
Maybe that would stop her
I could think it was a break and enter
But even that wouldn’t prevent her
From going out again without me
If she lived, that is ‘cause she’d go out without me
Again and this time
She might go out for good
It don’t seem she even likes me
'cause she don’t say much
And she don’t invite me
to come along with her
When she goes out,
She just goes out without me
If she don’t like me, I wish she’d say
and leave me here and just go away
And maybe I would be okay this time
I don’t know where she goes
but she goes without me
When she goes
And you couldn’t stop me
And who would even try ?

Pitter Pat
02:36
|
|||
Walking down the street
First day of spring
When who should I see
Walking down the street toward me
But the girl I loved,
The girl with the big brown eyes
Never seen her on this block before
What a surprise
“How do you do?” I said
And I tipped my hat
“Fine and how are you?” she said
And that was that
Except for my heart
Which seemed to stop. And then
It started again and it went
Pitter pat, pitter pat
Pitter pat pitter pat pitter pat
Should I walk on down the street
Away from all I love
Or stop and take a peek
Oh, what was I thinking of?
I could hear the birds
Singing in the trees
I could see the blossoms
Blossoming around me
And then she stopped to touch her cheek
Like there was something that she forgot
And I remember the sky was blue
And I remember that I was not
And I remember how new, how new
The whole world seemed to be, to me
To me, as she turned to take a peek back too
And my heart went pitter pat
Pitter Pat
And that was that
And now
that we’re together she tells
That her heart went pitter pat too
